Letters to Sir Edward Walpole, 1777-1778.

Manuscript of six letters written by Horace Walpole to his brother, followed by copies of two letters between Walpole and Frederick Lord North. In the first letters, Walpole speculates upon the identity of Junius; he also mentions he is enclosing a copy of his elegy on Lady Hervey in advance of its inscription on her monument; the elegy accompanies the letter. The next four letters provide a detailed account of Walpole's experiences attending on his nephew, George Lord Orford, during one of his attacks of insanity. He describes the medical care given to his nephew; the patient's symptoms; and the effects of the experience on his own emotional state. The last letter to Walpole's brother refers to, and is accompanied by, copies of letters between Walpole and Lord North, which discuss North's "affront" to Walpole and his brother by appointing a Deputy Ranger of St. James's and Hyde Parks during the incapacity of their nephew, Lord Orford, who held the post of Ranger.
